Fair Division*

چکیده
Properties of discrete cake-cutting procedures that use a minimal number of cuts (n – 1 if there are n players) are analyzed. None is always envy-free or efficient, but divideand-conquer (D&C) minimizes the maximum number of players that any single player may envy. It works by asking n ≥ 2 players successively to place marks on a cake that divide it into equal or approximately equal halves, then halves of these halves, and so on. Among other properties, D&C (i) ensures players of more than 1/n shares if their marks are different and (ii) is strategyproof for risk-averse players. However, D&C may not allow players to obtain proportional, connected pieces if they have unequal entitlements. Possible applications of D&C to land division are briefly discussed.

Existence of a simple and equitable fair division: A short proof
In this note we study how to share a good between n players in a simple and equitable way. We give a short proof for the existence of such fair divisions. In this note we study a fair division problem. Fair divisions problems are sometimes called cake cutting problems. These kinds of problems appear when we study division of land, time or computer memory between different agents with different ...
متن کاملSperner’s Lemma and Fair Division Problems
This paper is a seminar paper that summarizes Fran cis Edward Su’s paper “Rental harmony: Sperner’s lemma in fair division” [1] in 1999. In this paper we introduce and prove Sperner’s Lemma. Then, we introduce the fair division problem and an al gorithm based on Sperner’s lemma that can solve some variants of the fair division problem.
متن کاملMarket Mechanisms for Fair Division with Indivisible Objects and Money∗
A fair division problem with indivisible objects and money consists of a set of agents, a set of objects, a value matrix which shows the value of each agent for each object and a money endowment to be shared among agents. Each agent has a quasi-linear utility function over objects and money. A solution to a fair division problem is an allocation which assigns an object and a money share to each...
متن کاملHow to cut a cake with a gram matrix
In this article we study the problem of fair division. In particular we study a notion introduced by J. Barbanel that generalizes super envy-free fair division. We give a new proof of his result. Our approach allows us to give an explicit bound for this kind of fair division. Furthermore, we also give a theoretical answer to an open problem posed by Barbanel in 1996. Roughly speaking, this ques...
متن کاملAlmost Envy-Freeness with General Valuations
e goal of fair division is to distribute resources among competing players in a “fair” way. Envy-freeness is the most extensively studied fairness notion in fair division. Envy-free allocations do not always exist with indivisible goods, motivating the study of relaxed versions of envy-freeness. We study the envy-freeness up to any good (EFX) property, which states that no player prefers the b...
